Project:

Country Estate

The homeowners fell in love with this 1804 stone farmhouse in the bucolic countryside. Although the original house was in pristine condition, the 1980s rear addition and kitchen were in need in an update. Maintaining and continuing the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century aesthetic was paramount.

Using the original house’s architectural language and years of experience in historic preservation, a rear addition was designed. Historically accurate proportion and scale were utilized to make the rear addition seamless. Replicating the fenestration, materials, woodwork details, stonework were key to achieving the finished look.

One the main level, the hearth room occupies the entire rear addition. All of the modern kitchen amenities blend perfectly with the historic house with the custom inset cabinets and rustic walnut island. The hearth is a perfect recreation of the period and serves as the room’s centerpiece. The great hall connects to the original house with access to the new butlers pantry and sunroom.

A new stair to the second floor replicates historic winding back stairs. A new master suite with fireplace completes the addition. The luxury bathroom is an updated take on the traditional.

The extensive property encompasses many outbuildings. The existing historic red barn is flanked by new matching carriage house garages, creating a new parking court. A new porch was added to the barn to enjoy the meadow views.

This once in a lifetime property is a true stand out in Baltimore County thanks to the partnership with a very knowledgeable and willing homeowner.
